Assistant Technical Director (Regular/Full-time)

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Assistant Technical Director (ATD) works closely with the Technical Director to manage the scene shop, plan and direct scenery construction, and oversee load-ins and strikes for the Alliance Theatre’s 12 annual productions, including LORT B and D stages, as well as Theatre for Young Audiences shows. The ATD is also partially responsible for producing construction drawings using AutoCAD, maintaining shop inventory, purchasing/procuring specialty hardware and materials, and upkeep of accounting documents. Position will remain open until filled.

 

Work Schedule:

·       Typically, Monday - Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm, with late nights and weekends required as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

·       Effectively assisting in the day-to-day management of the scene shop.

·       Planning scenery construction methods to safe and efficient standards.

·       Supervising the shop foreman and carpenters to ensure construction accuracy.

·       Shopping/buying to maintain materials inventory and to procure specialty hardware and materials as necessary.

·       Managing accounting documents.

·       Maintaining excellence in quality and efficiency of work.

·       Upholding the artistic standards and the mission of the Alliance Theatre.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

·       Shop foreman, four scenic carpenters, occasional over hire carpenters.

 

Qualifications:

            Education/Experience:

·       Three years of experience in a supervisory role in a scene shop.

·       A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Technical Production or similar is preferred.

·       Must have complete proficiency and demonstrable experience using AutoCAD to create scenery construction drawings.

·      Must have advanced modern scenery knowledge, including wood, steel, and aluminum construction techniques, rigging, automation, and scenic processes.

·       Must have complete proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including the ability to create and maintain complex accounting spreadsheets.

·       Must have a valid driver’s license.

 

Skills and Abilities:

·       Must demonstrate superior written and verbal communication skills.

·       Must be incredibly organized and detail-oriented.

·       Must be a self-starter who can take initiative as a crew leader.

·       Some standing, walking, bending, frequent use of hands, stooping and heavy lifting (at least 75 pounds) is needed.

·       80% office work at a computer (option to sit or stand).

·       Some work at heights on ladders and personnel lifts is necessary.

·       The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
