Governor’s Energy Challenge

Woodruff Arts Center reduced its use of energy in 2008 by 8%. In April 2009, we signed on to take the governor’s energy challenge to reduce our energy use by 15% by 2020. By becoming a Partner of the Governor’s Energy Challenge, we commit to reducing our energy usage by 15% below our 2007 baseline usage per square foot or unit of production by 2020.

Georgia's Natural Resources are protected for future generations

Governor Sonny Perdue has committed all state agencies in Georgia to reduce energy consumption per square foot in state facilities 15 percent below FY2007 levels by 2020. To further ensure that Georgia’s natural resources are protected for future generations to use and to enjoy, the Governor also challenged Georgia’s citizens, businesses and local governments to match the state’s effort. Meeting this goal will reduce Georgia’s dependence on traditional energy sources, support the local economy, and improve the environment. When fully implemented, the Governor’s Energy Challenge will provide information, technical assistance.

Recycling Program

Recycle Logo

Single stream recycling refers to a system in which all paper fibers and containers are mixed together in a collection truck, instead of being sorted into separate commodities (newspaper, cardboard, plastic, glass, etc) by the company and handled separately throughout the collection process. Single-Stream Recycling allows us to participate in environmental stewardship and sustainability in an easy, convenient manner. This service provides a co-mingle system for all of our recyclable materials.

Recyling containers are strategically placed in and around copy rooms and identified by the recycling logo.

Recycling Facts

  • In a lifetime, the average American will throw away 600 times his or her adult weight in garbage - leaving a legacy of 90,000 Ibs of trash for our children
  • Americans throw away enough office paper annually to build a wall 12 feet high streching from Los Angeles to New York City.
  • Americans throw away enough aluminum every three months to rebuild an entire commercial air fleet.

Transportation

Ride Marta

The Woodruff Arts Center transit pass program is presently one of the most successful in Midtown. As part of the program WAC sells MARTA, GCT, CCT and GRTA passes to on-site employees on a pre-tax basis for 60% off of the listed price. And beginning March 2009, the Woodruff Arts Center reached out to more employees to public transportation by offering significant discounts to its contracted employees.

Below is a breakdown of the passes sold in March 2009

  • 182 MARTA monthly Passes
  • 2 GCT monthly passes
  • 8 CCT 31-day round-trip passes
  • 2 CCT 31-day adult local passes
  • 2 GRTAXpress 31-day passes

The passes are currently purchased through Midtown Alliance and distributed through the WAC. Thank you to everyone who is taking advantage of this program!

Bicycle Program

Woodruff Arts Center has installed bicycle racks on campus to encourage bike commuting. Bike racks are located behind the Parking Office, in the Callaway Plaza Area, and in the Piazza, while showers and changing areas are available inside the Memorial Arts Building of WAC.

Car Sharing Program

WAC has a Zipcar located on-site. WAC employees can become Zipcar members for a fee of $25 annually. Zipcar’s service complements the work that WAC is doing to promote alternatives. Each Zipcar vehicle can replace up to 20 privately owned vehicles, so its members are helping to reduce emissions and ease traffic congestion.

Woodruff Arts Center Parking and Alternative Transportation Office

Located at the P5 Level of the Woodruff Arts Center Parking Garage, the WAC Parking and Alternative Transportation Office is available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5pm to talk to you about your alternative transportation options. Aside from what is already in place that has been spearheaded by this office, there are other great options that give back great incentives from Midtown Alliance.

Walk/Bike Incentives are available through Midtown Alliance. Commuters logging 20 or more bike trips or 20 or more walk trips in a month receive a $10 Barnes and Noble e-certificate. Additional special prizes such as $25 Visa Gift Card await those who participate and log on their trips.
