When I’m at the museum and I look at a painting
about unicorns, I go home and pretend they are real.
—Anna
Kampfe (age 8), patron, High Museum of Art
There
is no better place for young people to explore their imaginations than
at the High Museum of Art. The museum’s
permanent collection includes approximately 11,000 pieces ranging from
fourteenth century European masterworks to photography and modern contemporary
art; its celebrated special exhibitions introduce
students to works from the world’s most famous museums.
The High’s programs for schools are equally rich and diverse, enhancing
the art experience for more than 60,000 students every year. As part of
its dramatic multi-million dollar expansion, the High opened an incredible
resource for teachers and students in November 2005: an 8,000 square-foot
education center for making and learning about art.
What we offer:
• Guided tours of the High’s
permanent collection and special exhibitions for Pre-K through 12 students
and teachers.
• Teacher and classroom arts education materials that are ready
to use, curriculum-based and designed for specific grade levels and developmental
skills; many supplement museum tours.
• Special events for educators.
• The new Greene Family Education Center, with its state-of-the-art
lecture room, three workshop areas, student art gallery and Center for
Creative Teaching, a comprehensive resource for bringing visual arts into
the classroom.
How
we help you:
• The High’s innovative programs,
such as the I See Literacy and I See History tours, let you
explore art in new and interactive ways with students in your classroom
and at the museum.
• Student tours—docent- and teacher-led or audio-guided—offer
more than a walk through the High’s galleries; age-specific activities
and study guides relate what students see to the classroom, Georgia Quality
Core Curriculum (QCC) and Georgia Performance Standards (GPS).
• Online and through the High’s Center for Creative Teaching,
you can access lesson plans, study guides, learning packets, digital images
of the museum’s permanent collection and more—to prepare for
a field trip to the High and extend the experience when you return.
