2006-2007 SCHOOL PROGRAMMING

Young Audiences’ programming is organized into four categories: dance, music, theatre and literary arts, and visual arts. Within each category, you will find dozens of programs that can be delivered in three formats to suit your school or class needs:

Workshops—which are either pure art experiences or related to specific curriculum objectives—are:
• Classroom-based, hands-on experiences for 20 to 30 students at a time.
• About 50–60 minutes long.
• Flexible enough that they may extend over more than one class period, if desired.

Residencies* are classroom-based, in-depth engagements with a visiting teaching artist that:
• Last from five days to several weeks.
• Involve four classes of 20 to 30 students a day.**
• Require advance planning with school representatives to determine goals, outcomes and activities.

Assembly Performances:
• Introduce students to an art form and/or culture through performance, demonstration and/or audience participation.
• Last about 40–45 minutes.
• Are appropriate for audiences ranging in size from 75 to 300.

Each of these formats has the power to reach students in exciting ways. However, workshops and residencies offer students the greatest access to Young Audiences performing artists by providing the time required to make meaningful connections between the arts and core curriculum areas.

* At least one class sees the artist each day of the residency.
** Residency costs include one two-hour planning session. Additional costs for lodging, supplies and per diem may apply.
