Scenic Artist ( Regular/Full Time)

The Scenic Artist is an integral part of the manufacturing and execution process for scenery and related items. Working closely with the Charge Scenic Artist, this position assists in the preparation and implementation of scenic elements for our productions. The Scenic Artist is also charged with seeking out and bringing forward new techniques as directed. The Alliance Theatre produces 11 shows annually, including LORT B and D stages, and Theatre for Young Audiences productions.


  • Typically, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, with occasional nights and weekends during the tech and preview process (40 hours – 50 hours/week).


  • Actively participating in achieving the artistic goals of the Alliance Theatre.
  • Maintaining, through personal initiative, a safe and clean working environment.
  • Executing all scenic treatments defined by the design under the direction of the Charge Scenic Artist.
  • Assisting in ordering and maintaining scenic supplies.
  • Occasionally leading an over hire crew in the shop or on stage.
  • Fostering a work environment of artistic excellence; equity, diversity, and inclusion; and financial responsibility.

 Additional Responsibilities May Include:

  • Assisting in the movement of set pieces.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Charge Scenic Artist and technical direction staff.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of theatrical paints, dyes, and scenic painting treatments.
  • Demonstrated understanding of sculptural techniques, foam carving, and painting of soft goods, including scrims and translucencies.
  • Familiarity with sewing a plus.
  • Self-motivated, strong work ethic, and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work as a team member and maintain a positive attitude in stressful situations.
  • Willingness and ability to collaborate with a wide variety of artists, technicians, and administrators with diverse backgrounds, including people with demanding artistic talents and personalities.

Education and Experience:

  • Three or more years of experience in related positions; or a combination of education and experience that has provided equivalent knowledge.

  • 90% squatting, standing, crawling, walking, bending, frequent use of hands, stooping and heavy lifting (at least 50 pounds).

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
